2017 Carnival News : Titchfield Bonfire Boys formed a new Committee for this years Carnival

Last night was the first meeting ( 6th Feb ) for Titchfield Bonfire Boys At the Queens Head Titchfield A new committee was formed. Angela Mayne was appointed as Chairman replacing Mick Biddle who is now Vice Chairman. Angela is 3rd Woman Chairman in the History of the Society.  Angela is from and lives in […]

Last night was the first meeting ( 6th Feb ) for Titchfield Bonfire Boys At the Queens Head Titchfield A new committee was formed.

Dates were planned for 2017 Calendar the Two main events for 2017 are  The Village Fayre this will be on Sunday 16th July 2017 in Barry’s meadow and Titchfield Carnival Weekend is 28th & 29th October with the Zombie Walk and Zombie Ball taking place on the Saturday 28th October

The Committee is looking forward to an exciting year ahead.

The Next meeting is on 20th February 7pm at the Queens Head

Titchfield Bonfire Boys are pleased to announce Alexandra D Great will be performing and bring the Calypso carnival spirit to this years carnival.

International renown, who created his own fusion of Calypso and Poetry, “Socablues”. Alex divides his time between live performance, running his own small record label and doing poetry, calypso and story-telling workshops in schools and colleges. For over 12 years he was calypsonian – in-residence for the BBC.
Alex has given lectures and performances in the Caribbean, Canada, Switzerland and the UK.

Carnival History

1611

Titchfield Parish Register records on June 23rd the, ‘shutting out of Titchfield haven by one Richard Talbottes industrie under God’s permissione.’ Tradition has it that the first carnivals featured the burning of an effigy of the Earl of Southampton who must have ordered the closure.

1814

Titchfield Carnival  was  in existence in 1814. An extract from the Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle of Monday 25th April 1814 reports “The Illuminations at Titchfield were very brilliant and tasteful-transparencies, variegated lamps, flags, and devices appropriate to the joyful occasion were to be seen: whilst a Band of Music paraded the town, the bells rang, guns were fired, and there was a grand display of fireworks. “

1880

The actual date of the first Titchfield Carnival is unknown but the Bonfire Boys adopted 1880 as the date of their foundation, although some references indicate it was in fact two years later.

1887

The first mention of a meeting of the Bonfire Boys recorded in the Hampshire Telegraph which took place at the Temperance Hall in the village.

1895

Regular smoking concerts were regularly held in the village Pubs to fundraise and encourage support the carnival – these were male only events held at the Queens head and Bugle hotel Titchfield.

1901

The Bonfire was in coach hill, as reported in the Portsmouth Evening News 6th November 1901

1902

Decorated cars and two bands, one being the Titchfield Mounted Band take part in the procession.

1903 There was a carnival parade but no bonfire – Both the The old village fire engine was mounted on a trolley with firemen Dressed in 16th Century uniform and Titchfield Fire Bridge manual engine where in the Parade the Carnival committee where Messrs Taylor and Uridge

1919 Complaints from some residents that their paintwork was damaged following the burning of a tar barrel in the Square!

1940 -1945 Carnival stops during war years but women and children walk the route to keep the spirit of the carnival alive.

1946 The carnival returns with all its pre-war vigor.

1964  Titchfield Carnival makes the British Pathe News  “Film which records the fun and games of Titchfield Carnival. Various decorated houses, people in fancy dress, decorated floats etc. are shown. Various funny costumes. Narrator calls the Carnival is an open air fancy dress party. Shots of floats…and a must if visiting Britain”

1972 Carnival moved from the first Monday in November to the Monday in the school holidays  October ½ Term – Carnival Attracts 40,000 visitors

1993 First Blues at the Abbey fundraiser helped to keep the carnival afloat. As the event’s reputation grows the July event attracts an audience of around 2,000. International act appear and take to the stage

1999  Titchfield Bonfire Boys amend constitution to allow for First woman Committee member to attend committee meetings

2002  Carnival Route changed as the carnival could no longer go on the A27 without the road been closed because of the seat belt law, where all passengers on the highway must ware a seat belt

2005  Carnival starts to face financial issues because of poor tickets sales for blue at the Abbey due to Advertising band from FBC – Carnival moved from Monday to a Sunday because of bomb disposal at Lee-On-The-Solent

2006 Blues at the Abbey cancelled English Herritage stop Titchfield Abbey and Portchester Castle to be used as summer time Music venues. Carnival is moved to a Sunday in the attempt to attractive more visitors  1st year South Coast run,  visitors number are serially down on pervious years  and costs increase due to new legation.  This was the last year the Fair was at Titchfield Carnival and Carnival router included West Street

2007  The carnival was Cancelled due to no funds and increasing costs and village Fayre was held instead and full fundraising drive went into action

2008  Titchfield Carnival Returns on a shorter router to cut costs.

2009 – Titchfield Carnival has the first Woman Chairman  Ann Whythie

2012   Titchfield Carnival has the new chairman Kate Scott

2014    Titchfield Carnival  returns back up West Street  and Carnival celebrates 200th year of carnivals been rported by the local press

2016  Titchfield Celebrates 70 years of post war carnivals
